ReplyDeleteBarbara Longley's Fun Fact is #4 Lived in Commune! Barbara shared:
ReplyDelete"My adventures in commune living began with a boy, a tall, lanky serious minded young man. We were both very young, lately out of high school. We'd hitched all over the US, backpacking and camping, and heard about the dairy farming commune in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. We decided to give this alternative lifestyle a shot, and so we sold everything we owned, which wasn't much, and drove my 1954 Volkswagen Beetle to West Virginia. The commune was not what you might think. There were no drugs or alcohol allowed. Everyone there was serious about living cleanly and organically. We had no running water or electricity, farmed with draft horses, raised vegetables and grains, and had a herd of dairy cattle. My boyfriend and I lived in a very small cottage with a wood burning stove and a sleeping loft. The property had a cistern, which is where we got our water, and we also had rain barrels. We ate our meals communally. I had my own guernsey cow. Her name was Satya, and she was a holy terror. My job on the commune was to separate the cream from the milk and to make butter. I also looked after the calves and took my turn cooking. After two years, I was ready for electricity and hot running water again. I left. The boy stayed. Broke my heart. To this day, I am the "got to" person for starting a campfire or a fire in the fireplace."
Wow! I'm not sure I could live like that, even when I was young! No electricity!
