In August we begin a series of 10 Author Spotlights with a brief Q&A introducing each of the amazing authors attending  Romance, Wine & Chocolate '18  on August 31st in Orlando, FL. 

Author #1: Today's featured author is this year's Keynote Speaker, the one and only, Kristan Higgins!

Kristan lives in Connecticut with her heroic firefighter
husband, their two kind-hearted, snarky and long-lashed children and several poorly behaved animals. In addition to being an author, Kristan is an award-winning baker and a fan of naps, books and movies, not necessarily in that order.

 Q&A with Kristan Higgins:

1. What genres do you write?
Women’s fiction and romantic comedy

2.Coffee or tea lover?
COFFEE!

3 Name one thing on your bucket list
Hang-gliding.

4. Do you have pets?
Willow, doggy mutt
Luther, doggy mutt
Huckleberry: magnificent cat god

5. When I wake up every morning I... tell everyone in the house about my exciting dreams, even though they try not to listen.

6. Do you have any hobbies or particular skills?
I’m a baby whisperer, a champion bed-maker and a pretty good baker.

7. Weirdest or unique thing you own.
This Christmas, my daughter gave me a little cardboard box containing one of her toenails, that came off when she banged her toe. So yeah, that’s the weirdest. For now, anyway.

8. What do you hope readers will experience or gain when reading your stories?
Laugh, cry, laugh again, and feel like they’ve made a friend.

9. What inspired you to write Good Luck With That? 

When I was four years old, I was the first girl eliminated from a beauty pageant. The reason the judge gave was I was too chubby. I was four! It was the first time I was made aware that my body was somehow not perfectly acceptable. My childhood was laced with reminders of that message, from family members telling me I was fat, asking if I needed dessert, commenting on my weight. In school, I constantly compared my shape to other girls. Every time I had a big event in my life, like going off to college or being in a friend’s wedding, I’d tell myself to lose weight. One of my boyfriends told me I needed to drop a few pounds.
 

The messages to girls and women is everywhere: look a certain way or you’re lazy, slothful, a glutton…wrong. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT addresses all those messages, and the damage it can leave behind. It embraces the power of female friendship, self care and acceptance NOW, not when you weigh a certain amount or look a certain way. I wrote the book for the four-year-old I was, and for all of us who’ve been told we weren’t enough, or we were too much. Screw that. We are lovely exactly as we are, and the sooner THAT message gets through, the better life will be for all of us.
