1. What genre(s) do you write?
Women's fiction and historical fiction.
2. Coffee or tea lover?
Definitely coffee! I'm a coffee addict! I'm not even human in the morning before my first cup.
3. Name one thing on your bucket list.
I'd love to see the Northern Lights in person one day.
4. Do you have pets?
No, not right now. We had a dog, Dexter, who died a few years ago, and my husband and I knew we were going to start trying for a family, so it didn't feel like the right time for a puppy. Now, our son is two; I think we'll probably get a dog within the next two years.
5. When I wake up every morning I... Pour myself a cup of coffee and sit down to play with my son!
Ha... I can't think of anything particularly weird! Maybe my big-wheel bike from when I was a toddler? (My mom saved it!)
7. Do you have any hobbies or particular skills?
I played the drums in high school, not that I was especially good at it! And I can (and will) enthusiastically sing all the words to Marky Mark’s Good Vibrations any time the song comes on. “Yo, it’s about that time…”
8. What do you hope readers will experience or gain when reading your stories?
I hope they'll see a bit of themselves in the stories--and find hope in the end.
9. What inspired you to write The Room on Rue Amelie?
I first had the idea for the story while researching my 2012 novel, The Sweetness of Forgetting, which talks (among other things) about one of the escape routes out of Paris for Jews during World War II. Having lived briefly in Paris myself, I’m very interested in WWII history concerning that city, and after reading additionally about escape routes through Paris for downed Allied airmen, the idea for the story began to take shape. It wasn’t until I read the memoir of an American woman named Virginia d’Albert Lake, who helped rescue more than 60 Allied airmen in France during the war, that I finally felt comfortable in realistically writing about an American woman who finds herself in France in 1940 and decides to play a role in an Allied escape line. The book was fascinating to research! So many ordinary people found endless depths of courage and risked their own lives to save others and keep the war effort going.
