One step forward. Two steps back. The Tufts scholarship that put Nora Stuart on the path to becoming a Boston medical specialist was a step forward. Being hit by a car and then overhearing her boyfriend hit on another doctor when he thought she was dying? Two major steps back.

Injured in more ways than one, Nora feels her carefully built life cracking at the edges. There's only one place to land: home. But the tiny Maine community she left fifteen years ago doesn't necessarily want her. At every turn, someone holds the prodigal daughter of Scupper Island responsible for small-town drama and big-time disappointments.

With a tough islander mother who's always been distant and a wild-child sister in jail, unable to raise her daughter—a withdrawn teen as eager to ditch the island as Nora once was—Nora has her work cut out for her if she's going to take what might be her last chance to mend the family.
But as some relationships crumble around her, others unexpectedly strengthen. Balancing loss and opportunity, a dark event from her past with hope for the future, Nora will discover that tackling old pain makes room for promise…and the chance to begin again.

Wow. As a long-time fan of Kristan Higgins, I've read every book the woman has written- this one definitely has more drama and had me feeling emotions I don't recall experiencing from her collection. This is a woman's fiction novel, not contemporary romance, yet all the check marks were there for the laughs (✔), tears of joy (✔) and sorrow (✔), quirky family and characters (✔), charming settings (✔), drama (✔), as well as the happy ending (✔). In this novel, KH added mystery and suspense to the checklist. The story had me thinking about deeper issues the characters were dealing with. Shock and fear (for Nora) were emotions in a couple of scenes I don't recall experiencing in Kristan's previous books.

I'd like to say that Kristan Higgins's writing has matured in content. She has a gift of bringing to readers an excellent balance of her signature humor, family drama, special friendship bonds, community, her precious pets, and a sense of happiness and fulfillment in the very end. Now That You Mention It is written in first person POV, so I really got to feel what Nora was going through. I highly recommend Now That You Mention It and give it 5 emotional hearts.

  1. ***FRIENDS! If you commented and don't see it here, rest assured that I have your entries. I made a switch in settings that allows VARIOUS ways to log in to comment. I had it set for only Google+ members. My bad! I'm going to figure out a way to repost your entries manually so that they're visible.

    1. Yay! I’m so happy you enjoy her writing. Fun Fact: I’m The Lorelei- name that was chosen as the second character of the Blue Heron series when she requested names on a Facebook post. So, Lorelei of The Sunshine Bakery is yours truly. ☺️ Kristan often asks for names or pets to include in her stories. ❤️

  9. I love her books, her blogs, and her FB feed. I love that she’s not afraid to be goofy—even at the risk of being a dork. I think we could be best friends except we live on opposite sides of the country.
